NAHANNI CLASSIC - FAMILIES

Nahanni Family Trip

Canada’s Nahanni River is a World Heritage Site, and one of Canada’s northern National parks. It is a world-class canoeing river. Spectacular canyons, Virginia Falls (twice the height of Niagara Falls), and fun whitewater make this the perfect family wilderness adventure.

for route details.

The Family Nahanni canoe trip starts at the northern boundary of Nahanni National Park, where we land our float plane on pristine Rabbitkettle Lake. We will have opportunity here to review paddling skills and techniques before heading downstream. We will be able to do some day and part-day hikes en route. The pace will be geared to a family-oriented trip: there will be extra time for fishing, exploring and enjoying this fabulous wilderness with your children.

The canoeing is introductary whitewater - current and swifts, interspersed with some bigger waves in the canyons. We will portage around Virginia Falls and have fun through the 4 canyons of the Nahanni, as well as Figure 8 Rapids. We’ll take time to soak in Kraus’ hotsprings. The trip timing, in August, will ensure that there are few (or no) bugs and warmer water. This trip is appropriate for children aged 9 to 16, with a minimum of one parent or gaurdian. Some canoeing and whitewater experience is necessary.
